Approval Granted: Mumbai Central Park Creation Project Gets Green Light

Mumbai, 11th March 2024 - The creation of Mumbai Central Park, spanning nearly 300 acres in South Mumbai, has received official approval. This landmark decision involves amalgamating 175 acres of the Coastal Garden reclaimed from the sea, along with 120 acres of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse land, which the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) has voluntarily agreed to return to the State Government/BMC.

The RWITC made this decision during their Extraordinary General Meeting held on 30th January 2024, where 76.24% of its members voted in favor of returning the 120 acres of land, originally leased nearly a century ago, to the State Government/BMC on a permanent basis. Concurrently, the State Cabinet has endorsed BMC's proposal to renew RWITC's lease for the remaining 91 acres, ensuring RWITC's continued activities until 2053.

I extend my gratitude to the Managing Committee of RWITC and its distinguished members for their historic and unwavering support towards the State Government/BMC's vision of establishing the Mumbai Central Park. This initiative, encompassing 300 acres, including the 120 acres of the RWITC leasehold land held for almost a century, has been a long-standing aspiration of the Honorable Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra. Our aim is to create a world-class recreational space akin to Central Park in Manhattan, USA, and Hyde Park in London, dedicated to the citizens of Mumbai.
