Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Bengaluru here on Saturday, tensions have escalated between the Congress party and the central government over the alleged non-release of relief funds to Karnataka.

Various Congress workers staged a protest against the central government, demanding answers on the delayed allocation of funds for drought relief and development projects in the state.

Despite the police denying permission for the protest, several Congress workers were detained during the demonstration. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar commented on the situation, stating that while the Prime Minister has the right to campaign, he must also address the concerns raised by the state regarding the allocation of funds.

"We demand answers on why the promised funds for drought relief and the Bhadra water project were not released as allocated in the budget," Shivakumar remarked, seeking clarity on the matter from Modi.

Responding to allegations by the BJP accusing the state government of supporting jihadis and disturbing law and order, Shivakumar maintained that the law will take its own course on any issues raised.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala echoed the sentiments of the protesters, highlighting the disparity between the taxes paid by Karnataka and the funds received from the central government. "Kannadigas demand their right. When Karnataka asks for its share of taxes for drought relief and development projects, Modi ji offers 'Chombu' (water container) instead of addressing the pressing issues," Surjewala criticised.

Similarly, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad criticised the government's failure to provide relief funds to drought-hit areas, emphasising that those who deny the people their rights have no business seeking votes. "Despite being one of the highest taxpaying states, Karnataka is being neglected in terms of relief and support," Arshad lamented.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Bengaluru and Chikkaballapura district to address mega rallies as part of the Lok Sabha poll campaign. With Karnataka set to vote in two phases, the political landscape is heating up, with both parties vying for the support of the electorate.

The 14 Lok Sabha segments in southern Karnataka will vote on April 26 during the second phase, while the remaining 14 constituencies in the northern part of the state will cast their votes on May 7 in the third phase of the elections.
