New Delhi, Mar 15  National transporter Indian Railways said on Friday that it is on track to achieve its best-ever performance in freight business, total revenue, and track-laying in the current financial year 2023–24.
The railways crossed an originating freight loading of 1,500 million metric tons (MT) on March 15, 2024. Previously, it had achieved the best ever freight loading of 1,512 MT during FY 2022–23.
During the current fiscal year so far, total revenue of Indian Railways stands at Rs 2.40 lakh crores, as against Rs 2.23 lakh crores in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
In FY24 (till March 15), the Railways' total expenditure stands at Rs 2.26 lakh crores.
"Total passengers traveled during FY 2023–24 stand at 648 crores, an increment of 52 crores when compared to the figures of the same period last year. Last year, the total number of passengers traveled was 596 crores," the Railways Ministry said in a statement.
In the current financial year so far, Indian Railways has laid 5,100 km of new tracks, which translates to an average daily track laying of more than 14 km per day.
