142 kgs of heroin seized in Mizoram this year

Aizawl, Dec 10 Law enforcement agencies in Mizoram seized over 142 kilos of heroin in the first 11 months of the current calendar year, officials of the state Excise and Narcotics Department and police said on Sunday.
While state Excise and Narcotics Department officials seized 76. 21 kilos of heroin, police confiscated 66. 27 grams of the narcotic drug between January and November.
The two departments also seized 247.56 kilos of Methamphetamine including a huge quantity of Crystal Meth (crystalised Methamphetamine) during the period. While the state police officials seized 143. 67 grams of Methamphetamine, Excise and Narcotics Department officials confiscated 103.38 kilos of the drug.
A senior Police official said that different drugs, narcotics and psychotropic substances seized by the state police personnel were worth around Rs 184.67 crore at the estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh a kilo for heroin and Rs 13 lakh a kilo of Methamphetamine and Rs 3 crore a kilo of crystal Meth.
During the period state Police registered 220 criminal cases and arrested 309 people in connection with heroin seizures while 15 cases were registered and 22 people were arrested in connection with Methamphetamine trafficking.
The immense increase in drug trafficking and seizure by law enforcement agencies in the state was attributed to the February 2021 military coup in neighbouring Myanmar which resulted in the absence of efficient administration to curb drug trafficking, especially in the Chin state adjoining Mizoram.
Mizoram shares a 404-km long extremely porous international border with Myanmar. The country’s proximity to the infamous Golden Triangle has made Mizoram a major conduit for drug trafficking through India and to Western countries.
