Bapatla (Andhra Pradesh), Mar 18  The Indian Air Force on Monday successfully landed aircrafts on the 'Emergency Landing Runway (ELR)' on the Kolkata-Chennai National Highway-16 on Monday.
Bapatla District Superintendent of police Vakul Jindal told the media that the IAF successfully carried out a trial emergency landing of aircrafts on the National Highway at Pichikalagudipadu village in Korisapadu mandal.
He said that two aircrafts, ‘AN-32’ and ‘Dornier’ landed on the highway and the trial landing of aircraft was carried out successfully.
Jindal, along with Indian Air Force officials, monitored the landing of aircrafts on the national highway. The trial of aircraft landing on the highway was conducted between 9 am to 1 pm.
The 4.1 Kilometers 'Emergency Landing Runway (ELR)' strip on the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway-16 was constructed to enable aircrafts landing during emergency situations.
The SP said during the time of floods, natural calamities and other emergency situations, aircrafts can be landed on the highway using it as a runway.
In view of the aircraft landing on the highway on trial basis, vehicular traffic on the busy Chennai-Kolkata NH 16, were diverted to other routes for a few hours. Some vehicles were stopped at various places on the highway till the trial landing of aircrafts was completed, the SP said.
Joint Collector CH Sridhar, Additional Superintendent of Police Vitheleswar and Air Force officials were present on the occasion.
